Role description
ABOUT THE ROLE
Join the BoardVantage engineering team to modernize search for a secure, enterprise board portal, evolving today's Java and Solr-based retrieval toward smarter search. You'll work inside a mature platform, designing an incremental migration path that protects authorization, availability, and rollback while improving how directors find critical documents.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Map the existing Java search flow, Solr/SolrCloud schemas, analyzers, tenant topology, indexing pipelines, ACL handling, and document retrieval behavior
- Design and implement a search facade with feature flags, enabling new retrieval capabilities alongside existing Solr search with safe rollback
- Partner with Search/AI engineers to establish lexical-search baselines and integrate improved retrieval behind the existing BoardVantage search API
- Ensure document- and page-level permissions are enforced within the retrieval path so unauthorized content never appears in search results
- Own Java-side changes for search filters, paging, indexing, tenant enablement, rebuilds, deletion, and lifecycle operations
- Improve index lifecycle strategies, including partial rebuilds, tenant deletion, aliases or partitioning, while minimizing downtime and infrastructure load
- Support shadow and dual-run approaches to compare new retrieval with existing production behavior before cutover
- Work closely with existing code owners to extend automated tests, introduce event-publishing contracts where required, and evolve the monolith incrementally rather than rewrite it
REQUIREMENTS
- Strong senior-level Java engineering experience with long-lived backend systems or enterprise monoliths
- Deep hands-on experience with Solr/SolrCloud, Elasticsearch, or OpenSearch, including schemas, analyzers, indexing, multi-tenant collections, reindexing, and lifecycle management
- Experience designing search APIs covering filters, paging, feature flags, rebuild, enablement, and deletion workflows
- Practical understanding of lexical search, including BM25, and how it complements semantic/vector retrieval for known-item search
- Experience enforcing document- or page-level ACLs directly within a search or retrieval path
- Proven ability to modify existing automated tests and modernize systems incrementally using strangler, shadow, or dual-run patterns
- SolrCloud/ZooKeeper operations, Azure Service Bus/JMS event publishing, or document-management platforms are strong advantages
- Comfortable collaborating across engineering, Search/AI, cloud, security, and product teams while making pragmatic decisions within an established architecture
