Do I still need my ERP if I have FP&A software?
Publisher preview
Yes, you still need your ERP (enterprise resource planning system) if you have FP&A (financial planning and analysis) software. The ERP records transactions, runs payables and receivables, and holds the ledger your auditors test. FP&A software reads from it to plan, forecast and report across entities and systems. The useful question is where each job belongs, so neither system does the other's work badly. No. An ERP records what happened: invoices, bills, payments, journal entries and the general ledger (GL) that results from them. FP&A software uses those records to plan what should happen next and to explain the difference. The two systems answer different questions. The ERP answers what was posted, by whom, and to which account. FP&A software answers why spend moved, what the next quarter looks like, and how the plan compares with results across the business. The ERP's design reflects its job. It enforces posting rules, period locks and approval controls so the ledger stays complete and auditable. Those same controls make it slow to change on purpose, which is the opposite of what a forecast needs.
