Disinformation

Disinformation analysis detects coordinated inauthentic behavior — synchronized posting, bot and sockpuppet networks, and artificial amplification of trends — and traces a narrative back to its source. Trust & safety and election-integrity teams use it to protect the information space.

Coordinated inauthentic behavior (CIB) is the term for many accounts acting together to deceive while hiding who is really behind them. The tell-tale signal is synchronized posting: identical or near-identical messages appearing in the same narrow window.

The actors are usually a mix of automated bots and sockpuppets — fake human personas run at scale. Together they manufacture engagement to push artificial trends, making a fringe claim look like a popular movement.

Analysts trace the amplification back to its origin to find who seeded the narrative. The goal is defensive throughout: detecting and exposing manipulation to protect the shared information space for trust & safety and election-integrity work.

01

Synchronized posting is the core signal of coordination.

02

Networks combine bots and human sockpuppets.

03

Artificial amplification fakes popularity; tracing finds the source.

cib:
  signal: synchronized-posting
  network: bot-and-sockpuppet
  amplification: artificial-trends
  origin: trace-narrative-source
  goal: protect-information-space

Read the implementation

Connect each part of the code to the concept before you type.

1. Synchronized signal

Many accounts posting the same thing at the same moment is the clearest fingerprint of coordination, not organic interest.

signal: synchronized-posting

2. Inauthentic network

Automated bots and human-run sockpuppet personas are the fake actors that drive a coordinated campaign.

network: bot-and-sockpuppet

3. Artificial amplification

Manufactured engagement pushes a hashtag or claim into trending position so it looks more popular than it is.

amplification: artificial-trends

4. Trace the source

Analysts work backward from amplification to find which account or outlet first seeded the narrative.

origin: trace-narrative-source

5. Defensive goal

The whole exercise is defensive: keep the public information space honest by exposing manipulation.

goal: protect-information-space
