Learn Container & Cloud Hardening

Cloud Security

Harden containers by running as non-root with a read-only root filesystem and dropped capabilities, and by disallowing privilege escalation. Scan images for CVEs (e.g. Trivy) and use minimal base images. Cloud misconfiguration is a leading breach cause.

A container is only as safe as how it runs. A securityContext lets you constrain it: run as a non-root user so a compromise cannot trivially reach the host.

Make the root filesystem read-only so an attacker cannot drop in malware, drop unneeded Linux capabilities, and set allowPrivilegeEscalation to false so a process cannot gain more rights than it began with.

Beyond runtime, scan images for known CVEs with a tool like Trivy and start from minimal base images to shrink the attack surface. Cloud misconfiguration — open buckets, lax security groups — remains a leading breach cause.

01

Run as non-root with a read-only root filesystem.

02

Disallow privilege escalation and drop capabilities.

03

Scan images for CVEs and use minimal base images.

securityContext:
  runAsNonRoot: true
  readOnlyRootFilesystem: true
  allowPrivilegeEscalation: false
# scan images: trivy image myapp:latest

Read the implementation

Connect each part of the code to the concept before you type.

1. Security context

securityContext sets the security constraints a container runs under.

securityContext:

2. Non-root

Running as a non-root user limits what a compromised container can do to the host.

runAsNonRoot: true

3. Read-only FS

A read-only root filesystem stops attackers from writing malware into the container.

readOnlyRootFilesystem: true

4. No escalation

Disallowing privilege escalation prevents a process from gaining more rights than it started with.

allowPrivilegeEscalation: false

5. Scan for CVEs

Trivy scans an image for known CVEs before you ship it.

# scan images: trivy image myapp:latest

01

Understand

Read the concept map and follow the code breakdown.

02

Reconstruct

Type the implementation, repair mistakes and work through every recall exercise.

03

Verify

Use the final check without hints; revisit weak concepts in short practice sessions.
