Network Security

An IDS like Snort or Suricata detects suspicious traffic by signatures and anomalies; an IPS blocks it inline. tcpdump captures packets live or to a .pcap file, and tools like Wireshark analyze them. This network telemetry feeds the SOC so defenders can spot and respond to intrusions.

An intrusion detection system (IDS) watches network traffic and raises alerts when it matches known-bad signatures or statistical anomalies. Snort and Suricata are the common open-source engines. An intrusion prevention system (IPS) sits inline and can drop the malicious traffic instead of only alerting.

tcpdump captures packets directly: -i selects an interface for live viewing, and -w writes them to a .pcap file. Analysts open those captures in Wireshark to inspect flows, reconstruct sessions, and confirm what an alert really was.

Snort loads a ruleset (snort.conf) and alerts on matches, while Suricata can replay a saved pcap with -r for offline analysis. Together these signals form network telemetry that feeds a security operations center (SOC) for detection and response.

01

IDS detects and alerts; IPS blocks inline.

02

Snort and Suricata use signatures plus anomalies.

03

tcpdump captures packets live or to a .pcap.

tcpdump -i eth0 tcp port 80
tcpdump -w capture.pcap host 10.0.0.5
snort -A console -q -c snort.conf
suricata -r capture.pcap

Read the implementation

Connect each part of the code to the concept before you type.

1. Live capture

tcpdump -i eth0 captures live packets on an interface; the filter narrows it to TCP traffic on port 80.

tcpdump -i eth0 tcp port 80

2. Write a pcap

-w writes packets to a .pcap file you can open later in Wireshark; host filters to one address.

tcpdump -w capture.pcap host 10.0.0.5

3. Run Snort IDS

Snort reads its ruleset from -c snort.conf and alerts on matching signatures, here printed to the console.

snort -A console -q -c snort.conf

4. Analyze with Suricata

-r replays a saved pcap through Suricata's signature and anomaly engine for offline analysis.

suricata -r capture.pcap
