Conflict Monitoring

Public satellite imagery (Sentinel, NASA, Planet) supports before/after comparison to document damage and activity, and NASA FIRMS adds fire detection. This is retrospective documentation from open data for the historical and legal record, as used by journalists and human-rights investigators — not live targeting.

Satellite analysis compares public imagery from before and after an event. Differences — collapsed structures, craters, scorched ground — corroborate or refute a claimed incident and are documented for the historical and legal record.

Open sources make this accessible. The Sentinel programme, NASA, and Planet publish imagery investigators can cite, and NASA FIRMS flags active fires and thermal anomalies, useful for confirming when and where damage occurred.

Crucially, this is retrospective work on already-published data. Journalists and human-rights investigators use it to document and preserve evidence to evidentiary standards; it is not a live feed for targeting, and it protects civilians and sources rather than exposing them.

01

Before/after comparison shows what changed on the ground.

02

NASA FIRMS detects fires and thermal anomalies.

03

Sentinel, NASA, and Planet are public imagery sources.

Read the implementation

Connect each part of the code to the concept before you type.

1. Before/after comparison

Comparing public imagery from before and after an event reveals what changed on the ground, retrospectively and from open data.

# before/after satellite imagery comparison

2. Damage and fires

Damage signatures and NASA FIRMS fire detections help corroborate a claimed incident for the record.

# detect damage and fires (NASA FIRMS)

3. Public sources

Sentinel, NASA, and Planet make satellite imagery openly available, so analysis stays on public, citable data.

# free sources: Sentinel, NASA, Planet

4. Document the record

The output is documentation for the historical and legal record — not a live picture used for operations.
