Domain & Infrastructure

Mapping the hosting picture — ASN and netblock ownership, reverse-IP to find co-hosted sites, and technology fingerprinting via response headers and favicon hashes — shows what an organization runs and where, informing both attack-surface reduction and authorized testing.

Once you have IPs, mapping the network around them matters. The ASN and netblock that own an address name the hosting provider and the address ranges the organization is likely tied to.

Reverse DNS turns an IP back into a hostname, while reverse-IP lookups list other domains on the same address — useful for spotting shared hosting or co-located services worth investigating.

Fingerprinting identifies the tech stack: response headers leak server and framework names, and a favicon hash can match a host to a known product or even a specific organization across the internet.

01

ASN and netblock reveal the hosting provider and ranges.

02

Reverse DNS and reverse IP find co-hosted domains.

03

Headers and favicon hashes fingerprint the tech stack.

shodan host 93.184.216.34
# ASN and netblock ownership
# reverse DNS and reverse IP lookups
# tech stack via headers + favicon hash

Read the implementation

Connect each part of the code to the concept before you type.

1. Host intelligence

shodan host pulls Shodan's stored scan of an IP — open ports, banners, and services — without scanning it yourself.

shodan host 93.184.216.34

2. Network ownership

The ASN and netblock that owns an IP reveal the hosting provider and the range of addresses the organization may control.

# ASN and netblock ownership

3. Co-hosted sites

Reverse DNS maps an IP back to a hostname, and reverse IP finds other domains sharing the same address.

# reverse DNS and reverse IP lookups

4. Tech fingerprint

Response headers and a favicon hash fingerprint the server software and frameworks an organization runs.

# tech stack via headers + favicon hash
