Geospatial (GEOINT)

Mapping platforms ground-truth a location. Street View confirms what is on the ground, OpenStreetMap is queryable so the Overpass API can find features by tag, and cross-referencing imagery against map data is the core geolocation verification loop.

Imagery shows you a place from above, but maps tell you what is on the ground. Google Maps and Street View provide ground truth — a street-level view that confirms the shops, signs, and layout you see in a photo.

OpenStreetMap goes further: its map is open and queryable structured data, not just a picture. Every road, building, and shop carries tags, so the data can be searched programmatically.

The Overpass API queries OpenStreetMap for features by tag — every pharmacy, bridge, or stadium in a bounding box. Cross-referencing imagery against those map features is the core loop of geolocation: matching what you see to where it can be.

01

Street View gives street-level ground truth.

02

OpenStreetMap data is queryable, not just viewable.

03

Overpass API finds features by tag.

Read the implementation

Connect each part of the code to the concept before you type.

1. Ground truth

Google Maps and Street View confirm what is actually on the ground at a public location.

2. Queryable map data

OpenStreetMap is an open, structured map whose data you can query, not just view.

# OpenStreetMap: queryable map data

3. Query by tag

The Overpass API searches OpenStreetMap for features by their tags, like all fuel stations in an area.

4. Cross-reference

Matching imagery against map data is the core geolocation verification loop.
